On Thursday, June 21, 2019, United Ways across the country are participating in a nationwide global service day called “Day of Action”. On this day, volunteers across the country will roll up their sleeves to participate in projects within United Way communities. United Way of Essex and West Hudson (UWEWH) will be joining this effort by engaging corporate and individual volunteers in projects within our service area.

Thank you for your interest in the United Way of Essex and West Hudson’s Day of Action. We will be hosting volunteer opportunities at the following sites on June 21st. Activities will be conducted between the hours of 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Please review and select from the options provided below. We are looking forward to your participation as you roll up your sleeves to make a difference on June 21st.


OVAL PARK/East Orange –  Oval Park is a local park adjacent to an elementary school and boasts a baseball field that was once home for the Negro National League baseball team in 1944. Currently there is a softball field, basketball court and play area for younger children.

Location: 10 Eaton Place in East Orange, New Jersey

Project Description: Various Projects

  • Paint park benches
  • Plant flowers along the perimeter of the park
  • Clean debris from play area


City of Newark Central Ward –A partnership with Greater Newark Conservancy and Central Ward Councilwoman LaMonica McIver’s Office.  25 Volunteers Needed

Location: Street dividers between the following neighborhood blocks, Irvine Turner Blvd and South Orange Ave. & Irvine Turner Blvd and West Kinney Street

Project Description: this beautification project consists of minimal clean up of debris and planting flowers along the newly erected street dividers.


Coretta Scott King PlaygroundThis playground located in the Lower Broadway neighborhood was developed in 2006 through a collaboration with La Casa de Don Pedro, the City of Newark, Essex County, and Home Depot/Kaboom. 25 Volunteers Needed

Location: 77-79 Martin Luther King Blvd., Newark, New Jersey

Project Description: Various Projects

  • Clean and rake the flower beds around the playground
  • Clean and rake the playground in preparation of laying new weed blocking fabric
  • Lay down and secure new weed blocking fabric
  • Spread rubber mulch throughout the playground

  • LIABILITY: I hereby release indemnify and hold harmless UWEWH, the organizers, sponsors, agency partners, and supervisors of all its activities, from any and all liability in connection with any injury and/or property damage (including any injury or property damage caused by negligence) associated with my participation in this volunteer event. This agreement will remain in force unless I notify UWEWH in writing.
  • PHOTO AUTHORIZATION & RELEASE: I agree to permit photographers, video or digital tapes, movies and/or sound recordings of myself (or my child) for the purpose of print publications, electronic media and other mediums. I (or my child) will not receive payment for these photos and will have no right to view or approve them before or after they have been used. I release United Way of Essex and West Hudson and its assignees and designees from any and all claims and demands arising out of or in connection with the use of such photographs, including but not limited to any claims for defamation, invasion of privacy or right of publicity.
