Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

All VITA Sites open on Monday, January 22, 2018. Click here to see the full list of sites.

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is a program sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that offers free tax help to people with $54,000 or less taxable income on their tax return. The VITA program has been crucial in helping hard-working families in Newark take advantage of all of the tax credits they are eligible for including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), and education credits.

Through the VITA program, tax returns are prepared by trained and certified volunteers. These volunteers undergo at least 20 hours of training and must pass an exam specified by the IRS before they are allowed to prepare and submit a tax return. The VITA staff and volunteers are held to the highest standards of confidentiality, quality, and customer service. Your tax information is only used in preparation of your tax return.

The expansion to eleven VITA sites throughout Newark in 2018 is an initiative of the Newark Asset Building Coalition (NABC). NABC will work to promote financial independence and stability for residents of the City of Newark, and provide residents with financial education, access to wealth-building programs, and extended services around personal finance. The Steering Committee is made up of key Newark-based stakeholders including: United Way of Essex & West Hudson, New Jersey Citizen Action, New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, Newark Alliance, The Prudential Foundation, La Casa De Don Pedro, Urban league of Essex County, and New Community Corporation. NABC is funded by The Prudential Foundation and Citibank, with support for the Free Tax Prep site expansion made possible by Citi Community Development.

There are numerous VITA sites located throughout the City of Newark. Please take a moment to view our Newark VITA sites listing to find a location near you.
